The Restricted Motorcycle Licence course is a mandatory 1 day QRide competency based training and assessment program. Students need to complete the Restricted Motorcycle Licence course to be eligible to upgrade from a Motorcycle Learners licence (RE L) to a Restricted Motorbike Licence (RE O)
Once you have successfully completed the course and are deemed competent your competency declaration will be processed online and you will be able to apply for your Restricted (RE O) licence online or, you can apply in person at the Department of Transport. You are required to hold the Restricted licence for a minimum of 2 years before you are eligible to upgrade to your Unrestricted (R) bike licence

If you currently have your motorcycle learners licence (RE L) and are wanting to upgrade to your restricted licence (RE O), this course is for you
This course is suitable for riders who have some on-road riding experience and can confidently ride a bike
Entry requirements:
- To be eligible for this course you are required to have held your motorbike learners licence for 3 months, unless you obtained your learners prior to October 1st 2016; in which case you are eligible to book this course at anytime
- From 1 July 2021 all learner motorcycle licence holders must pass the hazard perception test before they can take the Q-Ride RE Course or RE practical riding test. All learner motorcycle licence holders must pass the motorcycle hazard perception test before upgrading their learner licence. You can take the test at any stage during your learner licence period. The hazard perception test will take approximately 15 to 30 minutes, you will need at least that amount of time connected to the internet.

Course Components
Part 1: Q-Ride Exercises
The Restricted licence course is a competency based training and assessment program designed to help learner riders further develop their riding knowledge and motorcycle handling skills
- Figure 8’s – turn at a low speed with control
- Slow Ride – control the bike at a slow walking pace
- Slalom – weave around obstacles
- Controlled stop – bring the bike to a smooth stop whilst downshifting
- Swerve – similar to slalom, however faster
- Emergency stop – stop quickly and smoothly with total control
Part 2: Road Ride
You will complete a simulated road ride prior to a 2 hour road ride where the aim is to develop your riding skills and ensure you have the skills and knowledge to respond to potential hazards
Equipment Requirements
You can bring your own bike or NQ Ride can provide a bike for you if needed.
Please ensure you are wearing the correct PPE
- You must wear long pants/jeans, socks that cover your ankles and enclosed shoes (runners are fine)
- You will need a helmet, gloves & jacket – if needed, we can provide these for you

Cancellation policy - cancel up to 14 days prior for full refund. Less than that you are not entitled to any refund.
Rescheduling - a minimum of 5 business days notice is required to reschedule a course - if you reschedule in less than 5 business days you will be charged a $90 rescheduling fee for each individual booking.
Cancellation by NQ Ride:
NQ Ride reserves the right to cancel or reschedule courses due to unforeseen circumstances, and or events beyond our control .
If this occurs, bookings made will be notified by telephone or email and offered to rebook or be issued with a credit for a course. NQ Ride is not liable for any claims arising from a course cancellation.
NQ Ride will offer you a course credit at the discretion of the Trainer. The credit must be used within three months of the date of issue.
Weather - all NQ Ride courses will run regardless of the weather unless we decide the weather presents an extreme risk (eg cyclone, flooding) to students on the day of the course, and we will therefore exercise our duty of care and reschedule the course to the next earliest available date free of any rescheduling fees.
Forfeit of course and any fees paid;
No show: if you fail to turn up for your scheduled course for any reason, including work reasons, family issues, weather conditions, mechanical problems, etc you will not be entitled to any refund or to reschedule, and the total amount of the course fee will be forfeited.
Motorcycle not roadworthy :
If you have selected to use your own bike on any Qride course and it is not roadworthy, you will have the option to use one of NQ Ride‘s motorcycles if available. However, if a suitable motorcycle is not available, you will have to reschedule the course at your own cost (R courses we only have two bikes for hire)
Student not prepared to ride OR ineligible for a course:
If you arrive for a course and you do not have the appropriate minimum PPE (long pants, fully enclosed shoes, gloves, helmet and jacket)
Or you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. You will not be entitled to any refund, and you will have to reschedule the course at your own cost. NQ Ride reserves the right to make the decision whether a student is fit to ride a motorcycle or not.
If you arrive for a course that you have booked in, you are not eligible you will not be entitled to a refund and you’ll have to reschedule the course at your own cost.
Damage liability :
The registered participant is 100% responsible for any damage caused to NQ Ride motorcycles, protective equipment and property. Any damage caused needs to be paid for in full within 7 days of the damage being caused. Damage will be calculated on a case by case basis covering the cost of the damage (parts and labour) + 20%
